West Whale Bay Park

West Whale bay Park is located in Southampton Parish about 10 minute drive from our house in Somerset on the way going east. It’s not as popular as compared to other beaches in the south shore area.

According to Bermuda-attractions.com, “During March to April, you can see schools of humpback whales from here migrating through blue waters of the South Shore. Historically Whale Bay gets its name from its proximity to the south shore whaling grounds. The shallow water here once made it ideal for the butchering of the whales. The whaling industry didn’t last long in Bermuda though. Nowadays Whale Bay is a popular site for whale spotting excursions”.

Last saturday, May 31st 2020, we decided to check it out for the first time. So glad we did because we found it very nice and not crowded. I guess it’s one of the most underated beaches of Bermuda. Just take the the Whale Bay Road all the way to the end. It will lead you to a wide parking area next to a townhouse complex gate. There’s a sign that says West Whale bay Park and you can see a pink toilet nearby. There is a small park before you get to the beach entrance. It’s a perfect spot for some picnic, meditation, or simply just to watch the sun go down or observe the Bermuda longtail birds hovering around if you don’t feel like swimming and making your feet sandy.

A short walk going down the ramp and you will see the beach. It’s not as big and wide as horseshoe beach but the water is just as nice. It has fine pinkish sand as well and has so may coves behind the some huge rocks if you prefer a little privacy. Perfect for this covid 19 season if you want to avoid crowds. It’s definitely one of the beaches worth visiting this summer.

I wished I’ve taken more photos but the water was too inviting so we jumped right in. Consider these as a sneek peek.
